Tornado Disaster Strikes St. Louis and East St. Louis
Terrifying tornado devastates regions around St. Louis and East St. Louis killing many, injuring hundreds, and leaving thousands homeless. Identified dead list grows as relief efforts rush to hospitals and relief funds are organized. Authorities deploy militia. calls for national aid pour in as bridges, depots, and mills suffer ruin.
Tornado Hits Columbia Area Killing One and Damaging Mills
A deadly tornado struck Columbia and surrounding areas causing major destruction. John Hughes, an engineer, was killed while trying to close a window during the storm. The Columbia Rolling Mill suffered extensive damage with twelve furnaces destroyed and property losses estimated at 24 000 dollars. Isaac Haverstick died from steam injuries amid multiple hospitalizable injuries. Debris and damage spread to Wrightsville, Mountville, and Kohrerstown with church, school, and lumber yard damage reported.

Prohibitionists Defeat Free Silver Plank At Convention
In Pittsburg on May 25 the Prohibition party convention defeated the free silver plank by 587 to 427. Governor St John voiced emotion over the outcome as delegates debated Patton’s nonsectarian school proposal. The party adopted a single plank platform calling for nationwide prohibition and pledged unity under that cause. Joshua Levering was nominated for president and Hale Johnson for vice president, with adjournment at 12.20 a.m.
