Offer promotes full regular made hosiery with high spliced heels and double soles. Three pairs per box, guaranteed 50 gauge, summer weight, described as high class and famous in the valley.
A Houston era cyclone struck Sherman Texas at about five o clock causing massive destruction. Officials report numerous deaths with estimates near one hundred and many injuries. City buildings were turned into hospitals as the cyclone tore through Fairview and nearby areas. Mayor Lane of Denison described a roaring wind and mud while residents searched for the dead. A long list of killed and injured includes families and individuals across the city as relief efforts began.
North Carolina delegates pledge to back Pritchard for U S Senate and McKinley for president while Wyoming and West Virginia conventions instruct for McKinley. North Carolina balloting for governor began after noon with multiple ballots.
A Philadelphia common pleas court verdict awards Terrence V. Powderly ex master workman $4,225.72 against James R. Sovereign general master workman and the Knights of Labor. The suit claimed balance for Powderly’s services as master workman of the order.
The American Protective Association held a morning session in Washington on May 1. The committee on agitation and education proposed dropping the more provocative agitation and reform proposals. The action aimed to remove dangerous elements from agitation efforts.
Robert E. Edwards, formerly with the Pullman Palace Car Co, shot his wife in the temple then killed himself in Chicago. Mrs. Edwards is reported recovering. Edwards, from Pittsburg, had been in the city with his 26 year old wife. Police found letters suggesting infidelity and secrecy. Edwards was said to be related to a Pullman official in Richmond.
Warner Miller states he is not a candidate for vice president with McKinley and has had no dealings with Hanna. He backs Governor Morton in New York and commits to supporting any suitable Republican candidate, while signaling McKinley as his second choice and urging a sound money platform at St Louis.
Bishop James N. Fitzgerald presided as bishops were to be elected with two thirds of votes required. First ballots showed J. W. Hamilton 107, Earl Cranston 115, C. C. McCabe 141, J. W. Bowen 148. A second ballot: C. McCabe 218, Bowen 175, Cranston 167, Hammond 161. A third ballot was ordered with results to be announced in the morning.
A May 15 Philadelphia report cites a letter from Matanzas describing a Spanish column under Colonel Aldea killing 64 noncombatants, setting fires in a cane field, and leaving bodies to burn. It also details two white men found lashed together with machete evidence and claims insurgents could not be responsible.

One of the season’s largest audiences attended the Frothingham last night for Digby Bell and company in A Midnight Bell a benefit for the Green Ridge wheelmen. Bell’s rustic dean Lemuel Tid impresses. the scenic display is elaborate. Laura Joyce Bell stars. James Garney Jr arranged the bicycle club benefit netting about 260 dollars.
Palestine hotel proprietor Harry P McCabe was arrested by Constable Timothy Jones for selling liquor without a license near the Driving park. He waived a hearing and was held in 1500 to await court with Riley Edwards as bondsman. John Layborn, former proprietor, was convicted and jailed. his nephew James Boyle faced the same charge and also received a sentence.
In RK Dun & Co weekly Review of Trade, May reports show 244 US failures versus 211 last year and 33 in Canada versus 37. Business remains restrained until crops clarify demand and political direction, with delays in orders and potential late-year surge if outlook improves. The boot and shoe industry leads gains, shipping near record volumes while other sectors lag.
Burglary at ex Judge Ward residence 124 South Sumner avenue yesterday morning yields 150 in silverware. A barking dog woke Ward and his son Douglass who saw a man at the door and heard a quiet warning. The intruder fled, chloroform odor noted, and a female servant found under the drug’s influence. Police suspect a professional gang, aiming to strike during big events nearby.
Next Monday an order takes effect shifting two crews twelve men from Green Ridge to Wilkes-Barre. Morning trains at 6 45 and 7 move from here to Wilkes-Barre while afternoon trains at 4 55 and 7 41 p m run through. Conductors Nichola and Cook lead two trains with engineer fireman baggage master and two brakemen also moving.
An accumulation of gas in the Bellevue vein has halted operations at the Bellevue colliery. A cave-in six months ago damaged property and narrowed an air passage, allowing gas to grow daily. On Tuesday the mine closed until danger can be remedied. a new vent and fresh air system are planned before reopening.
The Baptist Young People's Union of the North Eastern Pennsylvania district opened its annual convention last evening at the First Welsh Baptist church in Wilkes-Barre with delegates from Pittston North End Flyliawuth Wilkes-Barre South Wilkes-Barre Taylor Edwardsdale Scranton and others. Secretary Dr N S Dobbins of the Baptist Missionary Society spoke on missionary work in Africa as Rev Bhenzar Edwards opened proceedings. Delegates planned today’s sessions and devotional meetings with entertainment by local members during their stay.
The New Brunswick report notes Colonel 3 Santa Taylor, son of the late Augustus F. Taylor of Cairo, Illinois, died. He was said to be the oldest known Rutgers graduate, having completed his studies there in 1829. The notice references his Rutgers ties and the family background.
