Chief Ferber Outlines Paid Fire Department Costs
Chief Engineer H F Ferber presented a 1896 fiscal year estimate to City Controller Widmayer, proposing a paid department with thirty permanent men at 18000 salaries plus existing volunteer forces. The total potential cost would reach 65841.68 with equipment and maintenance items, while maintenance for the current volunteers runs 40220. He recommends adding horses and gear and new hydrants and alarm boxes, arguing the city’s growth warrants a paid service despite taxpayer concerns.
