The Tribune reports the Lackawanna County newspaper notes the Senate passed resolutions recognizing Cuban patriots as belligerents. It pledges U S good offices to Cuban independence and frames the stance as reflecting public sentiment despite possible Spanish discontent.
A Pennsylvania plan to divert interest on state and city balances to the commonwealth faces a legislative push. An ordinance in Scranton was killed by all Democrats in common council. Names of supporters and critics are listed, urging reform and questioning the city treasurer’s pay, with calls for honest votes for the Republican party.
The text lauds the House Naval Affairs Committee for recommending six battleships and fifteen torpedo boats, arguing that a $40,000,000 outlay now strengthens the navy and saves ten times that in crisis. It notes Senate fortifications support and rebuts peace‑at‑any‑price objections, asserting warships remain essential to national prestige and safety.
A sweeping editorial criticizes Democratic calls to avoid tariff policy and foreign affairs topics while urging accountability for past policies under Cleveland. It condemns lenient treatment in a justice case, questions reform clubs and liquor laws, and notes local papers promote educational speedups and Yellowstone features.
The Philadelphia Bulletin notes Senator Quay intends Governor Hastings to deliver the nominating speech in St Louis as Pennsylvania presents its favorite son at the national convention. Hastings’ vigorous Sherman speech in Chicago eight years ago is cited, with commentary on Quay and Cameron’s long political alignment and the expected spirited contest at the convention.
An extended, imperfect text discusses Quay, Cameron, Lincoln, and party dynamics. It mentions Roger Quay and Cameron’s cabinets, political strategy, and hopes for a decisive leadership style, alongside critiques of administration methods and moral questions in the era. The prose reflects heated partisan analysis and forecasting of future influence.
A fragmented column presents a surreal sequence of astrology phrases and satirical notes. The piece mocks publishing quirks, mentions counterfeit goods and a non copyrighted smoked herring recipe, and ends with a biting note about bread versus cake.
