His career faced political obstruction over his Klan battles, with later Senate confirmation as lieutenant colonel on retirement.

Appleton Wisconsin February 27 two young girls ages 14 and 12 were fatally burned in a fire at the Bushman home in Sagole twelve miles north of Appleton. Neighbors aided by breaking in a window found the girls missing from their bed they likely suffocated in smoke while escaping toward an inner stairway.
Haverhill Massachusetts February 27 Caspar Cronk probate reveals a will that delays its effect for 100 years. The principal heir Winslow Cronk a painter lives in Haverhill with four sons Frank Arthur Harry and George all based in Haverhill and Bradford. The estate is believed to total about 75000000 dollars.
An experimental Lehigh Valley train ran from Jersey City to Wilkes-Barre and on toward Buffalo to measure speed on a 499 mile trip. The consist included engine, two Pullman cars Marietta Aberdeen and two coaches with a target of ten and a half hours at an average 42.85 mph. The train began at 11.40 a.m. and reached Wilkes-Barre at 4.10 p.m. two minutes early after changes en route.
The Valley flyer arrived in Buffalo at 9 30 pm, half an hour ahead of schedule, while officials including Rollin H. Wilbur and Chas G. Lee rode aboard. The race to Buffalo aimed to outpace New York Central's Empire State express.
