Quietfants on Lackawanna Saloon Tour Triggered Police Probe
Complaint to Scranton police alleges two young girls with singing voices were moved among saloons on Lackawanna avenue while two men collected pennies and pickles for liquor. The quartet was found at the Hub on Spruce street and brought to the central station. One man, Alfred H Bastedo, with daughters Minnie and Efe, and Frank Davenport are involved. Bastedo, an out of work former hotelier, tells of losses from a fire that destroyed his business and his wife’s death. The children defend him and produced coins to show earnings. Chief Robling ordered an end to begging. Bastedo promised to comply.
