Valley Company Seeks Abandonment Of City Route

The Valley Passenger Railway Company filed papers in Harrisburg seeking to abandon portions of its planned route through ten boroughs and three townships near the city. A prior court ruling requires electric car companies to secure franchises and complete the road within two years of franchise grant, or lose rights. The Valley line from Avoca to Olyphant via Scranton saw only part built and franchises for the full route not obtained, with rights later leased to Scranton Traction. City officials had revoked privileges as franchises were secured, and the company now seeks state approval to abandon part of the chartered route, prompting debate on whether franchises should be forfeited and leaving court action as the likely test.
