A dated Havana dispatch discusses a planned Sunday election in Cuba as a sham, with autonomists boycotting and the Union Constitutional party poised for a walkover. It describes Weyler’s harsh rule, insurgent strength growing in Santa Clara and Havana provinces, and Gomez’s troop movements as the war intensifies. A Washington letter from Gomez to Cuban Delegate Palma complains of Spanish cruelty and stresses perseverance and eventual victory.
Maximo Gomez and an unnamed companion carried money in a satchel along Broadway near Great Jones Street. Price was robbed when a boy struck him from behind and the bag was taken. Duffy was identified as the suspect, with Price confessing complicity. Scott waived as a witness, Price jailed.
A Democratic national committee sub committee met at the Palmer house in Chicago to plan the July 7 convention. Present were Chairman W. F. Harrity of Philadelphia J. G. Prather of Missouri Thomas H. Two Bailey and Gleason Chandeliers clerks, Walter Price aged 19 and James Scott 17, were robbed near Great Jones Street and Broadway as they left the Astor Place bank with nearly $2,000. They were carrying a check for $1,060 to pay the firm today.
Governor Hastings planted a shoot from the old Penns Elm on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia marking Arbor Day. The elm once stood by the Delaware, was blown down in 1810, and the shoot came via General Paul A. Oliver to Wilkes-Barre before being brought back for the ceremony.

Colonel John A Cockerill a famed newspaper correspondent died of apoplexy in Cairo New York at ten minutes past ten. He served on the New York World edited the Morning Advertiser and later reported from China Japan Egypt for the New York Herald. His loss removes a leading figure from journalism.
Jury returns not guilty verdicts for Cubans and Americans tied to the Bermuda filibustering expedition. Judge Brown orders the defendants discharged and orders return of seized property. Pentwater Michigan April 10 attorney S. B. Minshall shoots William B. O. Sands, misses, then kills his wife and four children before fatally shooting himself. Sands, 65, village leader and G.A.R. member, dies from wounds. Minshall's motive cited as business losses and alleged mistreatment by Sands & Maxwell Lumber Co.
A Boston morning paper details the capture in Cuba of two American seamen and the subsequent shooting of Henry Bridger at Morro Castle. Edwin Burke of the Dilloway describes the voyage from Galveston aboard the Elsa Pickens, with arms and hospital stores landed inland before arrests and executions. Bridger was killed with others the day before the U.S. consul learned his fate. Whitney in Rhode Island politics and New Jersey and Oregon Republican stances follow, with Rhode Island Democracy backing William C. Whitney and Oregon Republicans backing McKinley.
Governor John Ly Jones of Nevada died in San Francisco at age 50 after a several month battle with stomach cancer. The news confirms Jones as a longtime critic ally in the city.

In Indianapolis Indiana on April 10 Harrison McKinley sentiment surges as McKinley supporters demand Indiana delegates be instructed for McKinley at the St Louis nominating convention. Harrison's friends refuse flexible instructions and the fight over delegation voting rights intensifies.
The Rhode Island Republican state convention met in Providence with Aden B. Capron as chair. The platform backed sound currency and the gold standard, opposed free silver, endorsed Tom Reed, and called for arbitration in place of war. It contained no tariff or presidential candidate mentions.
Washington April 10 The Senate devoted most of its session to the Indian appropriation bill and a prolonged debate over contract schools for Indian children. Mr Sherman opposed a joint resolution on Mrs Maybrick imprisonment as outside Senate jurisdiction, moving to table it before referring to the judiciary committee. The day also featured debate on a filled cheese bill and plans to cut taxes and tighten licenses while preparing an exposition aid bill and private pension considerations.
Washington April 10 The cabinet meeting lasted about an hour and a half with little beyond routine business. Olney arrived late, and no Cuban action plan or other sensational dispatches were presented. The president may act slowly on Cuban concurrent resolutions, stressing international obligations in his annual message.
Topeka Kan April 10 The enfranchised women of Ellis Kansas swept the municipal election with a full ticket elected except for Clare Sheldon who lost as police judge by five. Mayor M A Wade and council members Viola Gaylord Lillian Hussey Emma Shields Emma Newcomer won by about twenty in average majorities. The ticket named law and order and vows strict enforcement of prohibition.
