Motorola Plays Key Role In Nation Space Effort
Motorola operates the Western Military Electronics Center at Hayden and McDowell in Scottsdale under NASA contract to build the Apollo lunar mission comms system. The unit also makes a Gemini command system, transponders for Ranger 7 and Mariner II, and a DASH control deck. The firm emphasizes quality control, with about 70 percent of costs spent on reliability, and foresees defense spending shifting to smaller weapons while expanding semiconductor production.
