Cherokee teachers guide kindergartners to evacuate a school bus under supervision of Sherry Smith the district routing and training coordinator. Eight-year-old Mike Barnhart is assisted from the rear window as staff demonstrate evacuations. Older students view bus safety films in class.
Federal Energy Administrator Frank G. Zarb warned that oil companies could raise prices by November if Congress does not reimpose price controls. He noted the industry has been free of controls for over two weeks but would not hold out indefinitely. House Speaker Carl Albert acknowledged Congress cannot override a presidential veto on the energy bill in its current form and plans to proceed to conference to attempt a compromise. OFter the veto, the administration and House differ on price controls and rollbacks, with Ford seeking phased removal.
Iran disassociated itself from the oil cartel calling it extremist and said it would back a modest price rise at the Vienna meeting. Ambassador Ardeshir Zahedi warned a substantial hike could cripple European economies and worsen hunger and disease for billions.
The Senate voted to uphold President Ford's recommendation to cap the planned federal pay raise at 5 percent next month. The House could still reject the limit, which would leave the raise at 8.66 percent and take effect on October 1.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz stated that genuine progress has been made on a grain agreement with the Soviet Union. An unspecified official said the deal would guarantee the Russians 5 million to 8 million metric tons annually.
In New York the NFL and its players union announced an agreement hoping to persuade five striking clubs to return to work and ready the season opening this weekend.
Chicago public school teachers who struck returned to classrooms today under a tentative contract. The deal details remain disputed over the cost to taxpayers, with figures estimated to run into millions of dollars.
Democrat John A. Durkin was sworn in as New Hampshire's junior senator after winning a Tuesday special election. He took the oath from retiring Republican Norris Cotton and was escorted to the rostrum by senior senator Thomas J. McIntyre.

Jean Ensign appeared before Scottsdale council to seek swifter action on hit-and-run cases after her daughter Janet Ensign and a friend were struck Aug 15. She pressed for faster investigations, immediate public notice of suspects, broadcast of vehicle details, and inquiries to body shops, noting a seven day delay before a suspect was identified.
The Scottsdale school board will discuss a new possible relocation site for the district warehouse at 4505 East Osborn Road in a closed session. Residents complain of truck traffic. a 10 000 square foot addition is contested. A fire safety report issued Sept. 8 criticized conditions. officials say a relocation plan is being explored and some traffic improvements await completion at Scottsdale High School.
