A military judge trimmed 102 charges against Capt. Ernest L. Medina to a single murder count for a woman shot during the March 16 1968 My Lai sweep. The charges alleging ordering the boy’s killing and killing 100 others were dropped or dismissed.
George S. Cooley, 66, of Scottsdale died Thursday at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital after moving from Palm Springs three years ago. Former Oldsmobile dealer in Pasadena, he later sold at Big 2 Olds Toyota in Mesa. Survived by wife Gene, sons Robert and James, mother Lu Cooley, a brother, two sisters, and six grandchildren. Services Saturday at Messinger Mortuary with burial at St. Francis Cemetery.
World War I veteran and former Chicago wholesale drug firm manager Ernest C Borchardt 74 died Sept 6 in Chicago. He moved to Scottsdale three years ago and was a member of Christ Church Lutheran and veterans groups. Survivors include wife Sybil son Robert daughter Betty Fox brother Richard sister Margaret Dogherty and five grandchildren. Burial at Green Acres Mortuary follows service at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Arizona Boys Community will open a second home named Jonathan S. Patrick's Casa de Compadres at 325 N. 7th St. It will serve as a vocational rehabilitation center for young men over 18 or who have completed high school and wards of the court. About 15 residents will be housed. An open house is set for Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. and the public is invited.
Arizona state Board of Health tabled for further study a proposal to limit septic tanks to lots of one acre or larger. The board returned the regulation to the Health Department after a 90 minute hearing with construction industry opponents, who say it would hinder development of outlying areas. John King of Associated General Contractors argued the rule would block development.
UPI report lists interim averages with gains across industries and utilities. Dow Jones at 908.57 up 5.40. trans at 242.82 up 1.26. utilities 111.20 up 0.20. Traders note broad advances with notable gains in many blue chips including IBM AT&T Ford GM General Electric and Chrysler.
In London the Mermaid Theater audience applauded 24 year old Sarah Stephenson for a nude Desdemona in Othello. She filled in last minute after Kay Barlow refused to appear naked. Stephenson said she is not shy and her husband does not mind.
The Senate rejected a motion to table the draft extension bill and aimed to attach a weaponed rider to force a Vietnam troop withdrawal by April 1 1973. President Nixon pressed for passage amid warnings of possible national tragedy and threats of filibuster by anti draft forces.
The Maricopa Association of Governments names five students to its Minorities in Management program. Enrolled in ASU Public Administration graduate studies, the cohort includes Frank Ohnesorgen and Cal Baskerville from Maricopa County Phoenix notes Robbie McElroy from Scottsdale and George Flores from Phoenix Tempe’s Larry Celaya. Advisor Dr Henry Hink ASU political science professor Scottsdale city councilman guides the group toward public administration master’s degrees.
A Scottsdale police officer Ralph Griffiths 28 collided with a car driven by Janice Hardin 17 of Apache Junction at University Drive and Signal Butte Road just after 11 a.m. Hardin failed to stop at a stop sign causing the crash. Griffiths his wife Gloria his daughter Crystal 5 and a passenger Mrs. A G Mini were treated for injuries.
The Arizona branch of the American Civil Liberties Union says parts of new faculty contracts infringe free speech. Executive director Ted Mote says the ACLU would defend members fired or disciplined for not complying with contract restrictions. The contracts require adherence to Standards of Professional Conduct. The code warns faculty their actions and utterances may be judged by the public, demanding accuracy restraint and respect for others.
Former ambassador W. Averell Harriman 79 confirms plans to marry Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward 51 next month. Harriman widower since September, Hayward widow since March, have known each other since 1941 when Harriman aided Winston Churchill’s war effort. Washington Post first reported the engagement. Harriman confirmed to UPI.
