Scottsdale residents will vote on November 7 to approve six charter amendments. The first expands city power over property within and outside limits, floodplain control, and adopting a master development plan. It would allow assessments and liens for garbage, sewer charges, and set publication rules.
Scottsdale city council member Doris McCauley urges broader debate on proposed charter revisions ahead of the November 7 election. She invites comments from residents who may object to any changes and notes sample ballots are available at city hall for careful study.
Two polite, neatly dressed men robbed Circle K Market at 7899 E. McDowell early today, escaping with 145 dollars. Clerk Ken Robenstine said the pair entered at 4:30 am, one gunman directing him to the cooler and requesting his sweater before fleeing as a car driven by Ed Brown arrived. The suspects, 20 to 25, stood about 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 10 with one brown hair and a mustache and the other blond.
The YMCA breaks ground Sunday at 3 p.m. for a new facility at 4019 N 74th St. Ernest Uhlmann, YMCA board chairman, turns the first dirt. Scottsdale Construction Co. will build a 71 thousand dollar complex with a gym, locker rooms, storage, offices, and lavatories designed by Donald Van Ess.

Arizonans will set clocks back one hour as daylight saving ends at 2 am. The state began daylight saving on April 30 after a bill to exempt Arizona from the Federal Uniform Time Act failed in the Senate following House passage. Lawmakers vow renewed efforts to gain exemption.
State and Scottsdale officials agree to hire engineers to locate the Papago East freeway path through Scottsdale. Four routes near McDowell Road and one from the Papago Buttes toward Thomas Road are under study. If federal funds are approved after 1972 the project could reach 1980.
Rural Fire Chief Lou Witzeman announced a fire rating reduction that could affect up to 6,000 homeowners in a zone between Van Buren and Indian School Roads from 56th Street to Pima Road. The typical saving is about 12 dollars per year per eligible home with hydrant improvements and phase two completion.
More than 450 Scottsdale residents were credited with aiding Scottsdale’s finalist bid for an All-American City award via STEP committees. Len Huck of Valley National Bank outlined congratulations to committee members, who helped plan street projects and beautification, parking downtown, and fire protection. Mayor Bud Tims praised STEP for driving city improvements and protections across Scottsdale as Milwaukee hosts the awards committee.
