UPI reports Soviet T54 tanks near the border as American troops in Berlin went on alert for 2 hours 35 minutes. A civilian driver and two MPs escorted a car into East Berlin, circled the city, then returned to the West while Soviet armor remained nearby.
Scottsdale district seeks seventy thousand dollars to install ten language laboratories across three high schools Coronado Scottsdale and Arcadia The booths feature glass fronts chairs earphones and microphones for individual practice with tape playback for self assessment The system allows teachers to monitor progress remotely and is already in use in other Valley districts with expanded uses including music and even football plays
Scottsdale faces a legal delay as Tempe responds to a temporary writ from the Arizona Supreme Court. If the writ becomes permanent, Scottsdale may have charges dropped for building without permits. Tempe argues public health blocks the project, while Scottsdale asserts the right to condemn land for sanitation.
City voters face a residence pinpoint step before the ballot. City Clerk Dorothy Ketchum says the county registrars list contained 12,000 names, while Scottsdale’s population is about 13,500. The 162 foot rocket delivered 1 3 million pounds thrust and reached about 225 miles over the Atlantic. Onboard radios transmitted data as eight engines burned for 109 to 115 seconds while the booster sank in the Atlantic.
The State Department bluntly warns Moscow that unilateral Soviet measures and tanks in East Berlin threaten any broad East West talks on Berlin. Officials say East German interference with Allied travel harms prospects for a negotiated settlement and that Russia bears responsibility for postwar accords. The U S note was delivered in Moscow by Ambassador Lewellyn Thompson.
