City Clerk Fern Anderson announced a revised schedule for nominating petitions and filing windows. Petitions available November 15 at 60 W Indian School Rd, due December 15. Primary February 15, general election March 22 if needed, mayor and council take office in April.
FBI agents killed during a gun battle with a suspect linked to a week-long crime spree that included the kidnapping of Lemhi County Sheriff Bill Baker. The area near Twin Creek in Gibbonsville was searched after a camp fire sparked the confrontation. Officials say the man was not yet identified and fingerprinting will confirm if he is Paul Ballard.
Arcadia area residents near Indian School Road and 48th Street discuss what to call the unused Cross-Cut Canal between the Arizona Canal and the Grand Canal near McDowell Road. The Salt River Project uses the diversion canal only when the Arizona Canal overflows.

A 22 year old man Luis Medina Perez tried to hijack National Airlines Flight 209 from Miami to Key West aiming to reach Cuba for refugees. Flight 209 was disarmed by a crew member with an alleged fire axe possibly used, and Perez was armed with a sugar shaped BB pistol.
President Johnson signed the $2 billion rivers and harbors bill into law but rejected a Senate and House Public Works committees veto provision. He denounced moves to tie his hands on federal projects saying the people did not elect him to preside over erosion. The pork barrel clause would block funding for river and harbor projects under $10 million without committee approval.
North Carolina Sheriff Marion Millis testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee that he and six deputies joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1963 to observe the secret group. He said they left after no violence was seen and rumors surfaced. The witness disputed earlier investigator statements and a Shelton claim about misused Klan funds.
West Coast Investment Inc and Phoenix Industrial Center Inc sue Alfred Hulet and Gladys Featherstone in Maricopa County Superior Court for 480000 in damages. They allege 1963 land purchases near the East-West Phoenix Freeway were misrepresented as 6000 per acre and freeway corridor, while current value is about 3000 per acre.
