Dr. M R Chappel, director of student health at the University of Arizona, resigns effective June 30 1967, citing temper tantrums and dictatorial policies of President Richard Harvill. He accuses Harvill of insults, limited medical care, ignored requests for more staff, and allowing a TB-infected employee to remain.
The Associated Scottsdale Architects push to limit a proposed design review district to the Old Town area bounded by Orange and George streets, Indian School Road and 2nd Street. A five member board would approve new designs including local architects, realtors and property owners.
Burglars using a 20 mm anti-tank gun smashed through concrete and steel walls of a Brinks Armored Car vault in Syracuse N Y. They escaped with an estimated 100000 dollars in cash and 300000 dollars in checks. At least six men involved, scene found after 8 am. Detectives recovered torches gas masks and shells at the site.
Cape Kennedy UPS report details the unsuccessful first orbital rendezvous between Agena and Gemini 6. Radio contact was lost at 11:06 a.m. EDT, tracking failed by 11:54 a.m. EDT, and mission canceled delaying 1966 docking attempts.
Arcadia High School selects Pat Carlin 33 as athletic director starting in fall 1966 replacing Robert Hendricks who becomes assistant principal at Saguaro High School. Carlin joined Arcadia in 1959, has coached JV football and baseball, teaches physical education, and holds ASU and Phoenix College degrees.
Scottsdale police say a fire that damaged the Coronado High School football stadium and press box Saturday was started by two young boys. The blaze wrecked the press box and about 600 square feet of wooden bleachers, beginning in a storage area under the north bleachers near 4 30 p m. A box of matches was found nearby.
New York Republican mayoral candidate John Lindsay accused Barry Goldwater of conspiring to defeat him as payback for Lindsay's 1964 refusal to back Goldwater. Lindsay, Buckley, and Beame race for City Hall drew denials from Buckley about Goldwater directing his bid. Lindsay urged voters to see Buckley and Goldwater as aligned with radical right forces.
The planning and zoning commission will discuss a 115 unit Motel 6 project on Camelback Road between 68th and 69th Streets. Motel 6 of California seeks a use permit for a multi family zoned area. Meeting at 8 p.m. in the council chamber 131 East Main Street.
Scottsdale PTA Council presents Up Front-Presenting Federal Aid, open to the public, at 8 p.m. in the Kachina School library. Speakers include Gene Met, John Kearney, and Marvin Sellem detailing special education vocational education guidance and library books under the new federal law. A film strip by the Arizona Department of Education will be shown with a business meeting and refreshments to follow.
