George Tracy of the Unit ed Citizens for Scottsdale Annex ation Committee defends blue protest petitions for residents opposing city annexation. He says signers may write I Am Against next to their names and that petitions will go to the Scottsdale City Council. The group denies involvement in a prior annexation process that failed over invalid signatures.
The Scottsdale Taxpayers Association will hold a public discussion tonight on the proposed city charter to be voted next Tuesday. The 7:30 p.m. meeting at Soloma School cafeteria Second and Marshall will feature board of freeholders members who drafted the charter and Scottsdale city attorneys Carl Roe and Roy Petsch.
The city council recognized the Greater Scottsdale Citizens Advisory Committee but reserved judgment on using it to investigate backgrounds of city manager applicants. Chairman Feltman said the 19 member group would advise the council, could expand to 50, and would have a secrecy pledge for sleuthing. Council support was unanimous.
Eighth grade students report weather measures with school instruments. High yesterday reached 85 degrees, low this morning 45, pressure 29.9 and rising. Forecast calls for little change today, slightly warmer tomorrow with breezy winds. today’s high near 88 and tomorrow’s low around 47.
City council agrees to have a police officer direct Coronado High School students at the busy 74th and McDowell intersection after parents protested lack of supervision. Police Chief Chafey plans temporary coverage until a school guard is trained and notes a traffic light may be installed if needed.
The 6,500 man Berlin garrison went on a five hour plus alert as East Berlin hindered American traffic. Jeep convoys escorted an American car with two officers. tanks moved to the border and were withdrawn later. The U S protested Soviet and East German entry practices and a tour bus was halted before safety concerns forced return to West Berlin. Major General Albert Watson II filed a protest with Soviet commandant Colonel Solovyev.
Scottsdale City Council voiced strong support for the city charter ahead of the October 31 election. Councilman Bi Flanigan said objections to minor provisions do not negate overall approval and urged voters to study each article before casting an affirmative vote. The same day voters also decide a $1,755,000 school bond issue. A prior charter was invalidated earlier this year by a superior court technicality.
An editorial denounces a Phoenix paper for misrepresenting the United Citizens for Annexation to Scottsdale. It argues the group is composed of eastside residents promoting annexation for financial and governance reasons and challenges claims of confusion over blue protest petitions.
Merrill told the Pima School PTA that Scottsdale voters will approve about 1.755 million dollars for expansion and improvements. The plan funds air conditioning upgrades at six elementary schools and Scottsdale High, plus a new heating cooling system for the high school. The elementary bond includes 339000 for cooling systems at six schools. The proposal also seeks 550000 for a Mohave School near Jackrabbit and Granite Reef and twenty new classrooms at four other sites as growth demands rise. Merrill said growth will bring 7000 to 8000 more students in two to three years and a new high school may be needed in three years.
The county attorney’s office remains unsure if the city’s annexation probe will be sent to the sheriff’s department for further investigation. Deputy County Attorney Joe Shaw notes questions about possible criminal acts and applicable statutes. City officials previously referred the matter to the sheriff after a fire destroyed annexation petitions involving 18,700 residents.
