Panel discussions on urban problems start today.
The Save Legend City Committee led by Richard Clever and Morris Engelhardt forms a new corporation named Western Skies to raise capital and buy Legend City from its trustees.
Grace A. Gaudio of 7001 E Shea Bird died Sunday in a Phoenix hospital after moving from New York City 21 years ago. A dress maker at Gracie's Sports Dress Shop in Phoenix, she is survived by her husband Gennaro, a brother in Brooklyn, and a sister in New York City. Visitation 7 to 9 p.m. today at Meg singer Mortuary chapel. Services and interment will be held in Brooklyn.
North Vietnamese troops struck the DMZ area near the 7th Marine Regiment headquarters as two helicopters crashed while evacuating casualties. In Da Nang area the 1738th Airborne Brigade faced mortar fire with light casualties. a Viet Cong mine killed 15 civilians and wounded 20 near Hue. A pistol-wielding woman terrorist killed two officials in the Mekong Delta amid fighting.
Washington lawmakers traded debate for cleanup as the 89th Congress nears adjournment. President Johnson, awakened in Australia, praised the session while Senate leader Mansfield called it extraordinary. Republicans labeled the 1966 nine to ten month session the most spendthrift in history, noting a $145 billion appropriation and White House party misgivings amid wartime tensions.
United Press International reports a nationwide wave of price protests by homemakers, including Denver signs of success as Farr supermarkets announce sweeping price reductions in Texas New Mexico and Colorado. Red Owl ads say they absorb wholesale hikes while calls to action spread from Washington DC to New York Buffalo and Everett Washington.
Police report two burglary incidents in Scottsdale. Sandra Podschine said three cartons containing over $1,000 in miscellaneous items were taken from a vacant home at 2312 North 84th Street during Oct 16 to last Saturday as she moved to Detroit. Douglas Anderson said $638 in golf clubs and accessories were taken from his business at 6125 Indian School Road on Saturday or Sunday.
In Aberfan Wales spring snowmelt caused gushed water from a hidden spring under a 800-foot slag pile, triggering a deadly landslide that buried 14 houses a farm and Pantglas school. By 3 am 139 bodies had been recovered including 110 children. 450 military personnel aided the rescue as 200 seamen joined the effort.
Scottsdale police report an unidentified man accosted a high school girl on 86th Street near Starlite in Scottsdale last Friday around 6 30 p.m. She screamed and the assailant fled. No injuries reported.
