Sanitation workers to meet city manager on pay dispute
About 300 Phoenix sanitation workers, half of the department, voted to strike Wednesday if the City Council does not grant a pay raise. They ask starting salaries from 370 to 600 dollars and reclassification from unskilled to skilled. Acting City Manager Charles Esser said no demands have been received, but city would try to maintain garbage collection. Union leaders disavowed involvement.

Two Burglaries Reported In Scottsdale Homes
Police investigated two burglaries totaling 103 dollars. At 7303 E Cypress a 16 gauge shotgun worth 65 dollars was taken from an unlocked storeroom after 4 p.m. Oct 15 to noon Oct 18. At 7325 4H Portland a radio worth 38 dollars was stolen on Oct 13 between 4 and 5 p.m. via an unlocked door. No other items were reported missing.

Fire crews battle garbage fires and alarms in Scottsdale
Firemen from the Rural Fire Department extinguished a burning garbage truck bin at 7119 E Mercer Lane after the truck dumped its load. Earlier, responders checked a Broadway Department store alarm at Los Arcos Mall due to a sprinkler fault. A city bin fire at 4800 N Scottsdale Rd was also put out with no cause found. Youth counselors set to discuss group training Wednesday
About 50 Scottsdale youth counselors will attend a round table discussion on group training this Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Led by Len Corte, a volunteer counselor and psychiatric social worker from the County Mental Health Clinic, the session targets training leaders for group therapy. Crash in Chandler Ends in Death of 17-Year-Old Driver
Timothy H. Root, 17, of Chandler, was pronounced dead at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after a train car collision on Ray Road. He died at 12:50 p.m. Monday following initial treatment at Chandler Hospital. In a separate two car crash at Hayden and Indian School Roads, Christine Martin, 18, was treated and released after failing to yield. Police cited her for the violation. A Durban fire on the docks caused over 14 million dollars in damage to five railway warehouses with no casualties.
