Arizona voters defeated a $100 million state bonding proposal by a five to one margin in a statewide vote with no county in favor. The accompanying measure giving the legislature power to decide bonding projects also failed by a wide margin.
The Imperial Wizard of the United Klans of America, Robert Shelton, refused to answer 147 questions on grounds of self incrimination during the House Un American Activities Committee hearing into a Alabama radio network linked to the Klan. Investigator Donald Appell read records showing 1964 65 bank deposits and 1965 tax returns. Shelton cited multiple constitutional amendments as reasons for his refusals.
Arizona State University professor Dr. Douglas Arner warned that academic freedom faces intimidation as professors conceal their views. He contrasted this with the university’s broader mission and echoed fears of a minority tyranny over education.
City council to consider annexing a quarter mile square residential area between McDonald Drive and Miller Road in the county island bordered by the Arizona Canal. Petitioners claim 54 percent of property valuation, while 30 of 50 owners support annexation to block a proposed commercial rezoning near Stable Arts Gallery and Paradise Water Co. parcel. The county planning commission meeting on rezoning is set for tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The Scottsdale City Council accepted petitions for a canal bridge at Granite Reef Road but suggested the final site might shift to another nearby location. About 1000 northeast Scottsdale homeowners signed the petitions led by Ray Feinberg. The matter was referred to the city engineering department for consideration.
Final rezoning of a 40 acre parcel at McDonald Drive and Granite Reef Road was approved after a two year delay. Stanley Short requested townhouse, apartment and commercial zoning for a single family area. Council debated continuation and planning study with limited support.
UPI reports the Tkeya Seki comet will sweep across North American skies today and Thursday in the century's greatest show. Kenneth Franklin of the Hayden Planetarium notes daylight visibility near the sun with viewing after sunset on the western horizon and again near midnight. The Weather Bureau predicts clear skies over the Valley as the comet approaches perihelion with a brightening tail.
