Storm Gladys Slows as It Edges Toward Florida Coast

Strong winds from hurricane Gladys eased to 75 mph as it slowed over the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters predicted landfall along an 80 mile stretch from Tampa Bay to Cedar Key by nightfall. In Cedar Key the few residents limited activity with boats tied and some windows boarded up. Red Cross shelters remained unused as the storm drifted eastward and coastal residents prepared.

Lennon and companion arrested in London for cannabis possession

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were arrested at Lennon's Marylebone flat and charged with cannabis possession and obstructing a police search. They were taken to Marylebone Lane police station after a raid that involved police dogs and lasted about an hour. The couple appeared later in court for bail and pending appearance.

Smoke Evacuation After A C Unit Fire At Camelback Desert

A burnt-out capacitor in an air conditioning unit at Camelback Desert School caused heavy smoke prompting evacuation around 1 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters shut off the unit. damages estimated at 35 dollars. Separately a leak at Debbie Ann Apartments flooded areas around 4 p.m. and fire crews stopped the water. Additional small blazes at Scottsdale Road and Palm Lane and a brush fire near 70th Street and Paradise Lane were extinguished by responders.

Air Force Probes Phantom F4C Crash Near Tucson

A team from the Air Force investigates the crash of an F4C Phantom that killed two pilots at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Capt. Larry J. Wright and Maj. Ray D. Hill died when the fighter went down in the desert about 12 miles southeast of Tucson. Officials have not confirmed radio distress prior to the crash.
