Smoke trails from a large brush fire on the south slopes of Four Peaks about 35 miles east. The blaze was set intentionally over a week ago by the U.S. Forest Service to clear about 500 acres for reseeding as high winds whip the area.
A battalion of the U S First Infantry Division withdrew for reorganization after 58 killed and 61 wounded in a Viet Cong ambush northwest of Saigon. In separate reports, 57 antiwar demonstrators were arrested in Oakland, and a Meridian jury faced a civil rights slaying case with Travis Barnette among 18 accused. Chinese reports warned Mao opponents threaten civil conflict in Hunan.
Dr. Kent Durfee testified at the Phoenix trial of Robert Benjamin Smith 19 that the slayings last fall showed a death urge with sexual stimulation. The rocker of the copper strike talks in Salt Lake City also faces potential interruption as an actuary from United Steelworkers missed negotiations.

City council members unanimously decide to hold a special meeting October 30 to bid on construction of the $2.4 million civic center including the new city hall and library, so they can greet trick or treaters at home on Halloween night.
The 1967 Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to Americans Haldan K. Hartline and George Wald and Sweden-born Ranger Granit for discoveries on eye vision processes. Hartline is at Rockefeller University, Wald at Harvard, Granit at Oxford.
The city council approved a 1 million dollar shopping center at Granite Reef and Indian School Roads by a 4 to 3 vote. Ken Murray and Doris McCauley opposed. plans include a gasoline service station and require construction to begin within one year.
Police report a Scottsdale home was looted of more than 10 000 dollars in furs and jewelry. Victim Charles M Duccy 55 of 7607 Chaparral described items including a 2000 dollar mink coat three mink stoles a mink hat an emerald ring with 16 diamonds valued at 2500 dollars and various other pieces. Entry was gained by prying the front door with a screwdriver like tool and loot was carried away in two pillowcases.
The Mutschler Investment Co. withdraws its proposal for a shopping center at 56th Street and Indian School after strong opposition from area residents and the Scottsdale School Board. An amended plan for a service station and bank near the site will go to the Phoenix Planning Commission next meeting. The district cites flood risk to Ingleside Elementary School and residential zoning concerns.
City adopts time and a half overtime pay for most workers and cuts four holidays while adding three vacation days for all employees. New policy aims to curb excessive compensatory time once reaching up to 1000 overtime hours. City also approves two service station permits under new design ordinance.
The Scottsdale School Board approved a 1.38 million dollar bond election as an emergency measure to relieve Mohave Elementary overcrowding. The proposal splits into 1.29 million for a new K-8 on Rose Lane and 90 thousand for a second 20 acre site, with construction slated to start if approved.
