Benjamin Fortes, 59, died in Cape Town eight days after Dr Christiaan Barnard and his team transplanted a chimpanzee heart to support his failing heart. He was the second chimp heart recipient and the first to receive the organ as an auxiliary pump. Earlier in 1964 Dr James Hardy performed a chimpanzee heart transplant in Mississippi, but the patient died two hours later.
