Soviet planes probe East Coast radar in predawn reconnaissance
Four days earlier two Tu-95D Bears flew from Cuba near a Spruance class destroyer off Boston and dropped radar spoofing chaff. Intercepted by four F-106s from Atlantic City and Otis AFB, the bears were tracked by a Navy P3 from Bermuda before returning to Havana. Pentagon officials note a surge in Atlantic reconnaissance and warn of bold Soviet aviation activity near U.S. defenses.
