New cooperative shopping area to replace wax museum on Fifth Avenue

Aunt Hattie's, run by Robert Borowiecki, plans to open Nov 1 with about 30 tenants in a 7,500 square foot building on a 4 acre site. The goal is a friendly, integrated one roof complex with entertainers, charity thrift spaces, and a strong early American interior. Rental agent is Southwest Commercial Realty. The wax museum moved to East Van Buren Street due to Scottsdale sign ordinances restricting major arterial signs.

Underground nuke planned near Kingman sparks debate

In Las Vegas officials from El Paso Natural Gas Co Arizona and the Atomic Energy Commission discuss a plan to detonate a nuclear device 30 miles north of Kingman to create a gas storage area. The drill would occur in a 4000 foot shaft with a concrete seal and no expected radiation. If advanced, approval could take at least three years and residents of Mohave County express concern.

Youth faces pot charge in Phoenix area arrest

Police arrested 19 year old James W Lilly of Livonia Michigan and two Phoenix teens near Scottsdale and Camelback Roads, charging them with illegal possession of marijuana and alcohol. A plastic bag with a suspicious substance was found where Lilly sat, and the alcohol offenses were turned over to juvenile authorities.

Fire damages traveling motor home on Scottsdale Road

A self-contained travel mobile home valued at 19000 sustained 1200 damage when it caught fire on north Scottsdale Road at 535 p.m. Friday. Firemen said a possible short in electrical wiring caused the blaze one half mile north of Indian Bend Road. The vehicle was driven by Arvita Johnson of Tempe.

Clubs seek to avoid duplication in Scottsdale area

Representatives of 27 civic and service clubs in Scottsdale have been invited to a Monday 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Holiday Inn to create a clearing house to prevent overlapping projects and services. William Burke and Duane Martin called the gathering with Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce as impartial helper and a $2.50 cost includes sandwiches.
