Unemployment Drops Slightly As Nixon Policies Take Hold

Washington reports September unemployment at 6.0 percent, down from 6.1, with jobs rising 325000 to a 79.5 million level after seasonal adjustment. Government cites a mixed reaction from labor leaders while noting a 0.4 percent drop in wholesale prices and record factory hiring outside a few sectors.

Congress reacts favorably to Nixon economic plan voice

Senate leader Mike Mansfield called Nixon Phase II proposals reasonable and urged bipartisan support. He warned Congress to back measures amid deficits unemployment and inflation while a Labor Party complained of veto power over wage and price decisions and Meany withdrew from a labor board offer.

prisoner SAIGON releases U S POW after two years

UPI reports John C. Sexton Jr., 22, was freed by the Viet Cong after two years as a prisoner of war. He phoned his father in Warren Michigan expressing desire for a Christmas dinner with family. Sexton was captured Aug 12, 1969 near An Loc and weighed 183 pounds at release.

Stereo stolen from Gary Wisdom residence burglary

Burglars escaped with a $400 stereo set after loosening a screen lock on a sliding glass door at 8320 E Turney. The burglary was reported Thursday but occurred Wednesday between noon and 4 30 p.m. No other items appeared taken.

Progress editor Jonathan Marshall joins editors group

The Progress publisher and editor Jonathan Marshall is reported as a new member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Other Valley members include Fritz Marquardt and Harry Montgomery of the Arizona Republic and Lowell Parker and Ed Fitzhugh of the Phoenix Gazette.
