King will oversee boycotts and a march from six Georgia counties after state troopers blocked Negro students. An aide said students will train for a march on Atlanta within two weeks.
Tonight the city council will consider a compromise rezoning for Schrader Farms on the west side of Hayden Rd north of Earls Drive. The proposal cuts commercial area and adds service residential use, with portions of the property on Indian School Rd to be rezoned to multiple residence use and a five acre parcel at Hayden and Indian School remaining commercial. The plan follows a study and may require changes to maximize commercial at Hayden Osborn.
Voters in the Scottsdale School District pressed toward a record turnout with more than 1,000 ballots cast by noon across 19 polling places. Heaviest early voting at Hohokam School with 161 by 10 45 a.m. Four candidates vie for the January vacancy left by retiring President Keith Turley.
Paradise Valley two man school board race faced a last minute telephone campaign by callers claiming to represent a Christian League. A woman caller suggested incumbent David Campbell is an atheist and that challenger Norman J. Brummer is a Christian. Campbell called the calls wild. Brummer could not be reached for comment. Polls at Greenway and Cholla Elementary were light as voting continued. Campbell, chair of the board, lives on E Malapai Drive and was appointed to fill a vacancy, while Brummer, a former candidate, resides on N 33rd Place and previously ran unsuccessfully for remaining vacancies.
