In San Sebastian a lone gunman shot and killed Juan Maria de Araluce y Villar, adviser to King Juan Carlos and head of Guipuzcoa province, along with his chauffeur and two police officers as they passed a lunch break. Police said a white car sped away after the attack, with authorities tightening controls near the France border. Araluce, 59, a right wing parliament member, had received death threats from Basque separatists.
