Dock strike vote near New York on three year contract
The International Longshoremen's Association with 50 000 members planned a Monday vote on a proposed three year contract for 34 Atlantic and Gulf ports. Union president Gleason suggested voting would start at 7 am and could last days while unresolved local issues in Baltimore Philadelphia and Mobile were discussed. He believed a 32 percent package rise would lift hourly pay from 8 to 10 40 and hourly benefits to 3 75, with income for workers idle due to automation. A yes would end an eight week shipping tie up.
