An artist sees fifteen paintings loaned for display in the office building by the Scottsdale Artists' League. The league plans monthly rotation to showcase the works and keep the exhibit fresh for visitors and workers.
Vietnamese paratroopers with U.S. and government air support killed hundreds of Communist troops in a major clash in the Ia Drang Valley near Chu Pong Mountain. U.S. B52s from Guam and fighter-bombers pressed the assault with napalm and rockets as the Ia Drang River flows toward Cambodia.
Several thousand protesters marched five miles from the UC Berkeley campus through Berkeley to Oakland to oppose U S policy in Viet Nam. Police and National Guard units surrounded the peaceful demonstration while court orders and monitors kept order along the route.
Jakarta Radio quoted President Sukarno saying Indonesia remains part of an axis with Communist China North Korea North Viet Nam and Cambodia in the struggle against imperialism He spoke to 300 military commanders from across the islands about restoring law and order after the October coup, naming Pyongyang Phnom Penh Hanoi Peking and Jakarta as the axis cities.
City Council plans to appoint a committee to review Scottsdale's municipal charter after the four year old document. Mayor Bill Clayton noted a panel will be named soon and any charter revision would require a vote of the people.
The United Nations Security Council voted 10 to 0 with one abstention to urge Britain to quell the Rhodesia secession led by Premier Smith. France abstained. Bolivia and Uruguay introduced the measure which condemns the racist minority and urges nonrecognition of Rhodesia and embargoes on arms and oil. Highs near 77 today with cloudy spells. overnight 45 with variable skies.
British princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowden, who danced with New York society at an elegant charity ball, shift focus to underprivileged children in the slums after a visit that highlighted contrasts between diplomacy, elite culture, and urban ghettos.
At the Waldorf a diamond crowned princess and Lord Snowden hosted a £100 ticket scholarship benefit for Churchill memorials with Lester Lanin's orchestra. The same day the Snowden’s UN visit drew 2000 staff and tourists cheering as they arrived and departed.
Pierce County Sheriff Jack Berry announced the arrest of Tilford G Baker about 35 in connection with the Charles Hyde III kidnapping. Baker turned himself in at 4 30 am and implicated two other men who fled the state. He cooperates and says he rode in the car that picked up Hyde while the third man helped plan the crime.
Joseph Weisz, 47, a meatpacker, faced 1000 to 1 odds as surgeons attempted the first multi member reattachment after both hands were severed by a meat machine. Eight hour operation included twelve surgeons. Doctors voiced pessimism and warned possible future amputation within a week.
Rhodesia's Premier Tan Smith asks nations to recognize an independent Rhodesia and appeals for a global chance. Britain declares Smith regime news censorship illegal as tensions rise alongside other international tensions and domestic strikes.
