Coronado student crowned Junior Miss Scottsdale

Susan Wilcox, Coronado High School, was crowned Junior Miss Scottsdale after a pageant with fourteen contestants. First runner up was Karen Frank, second runner up Chris Holloway, third Debbie Rudin. Wilcox also won the Scholarship Trophy receiving a $100 prize.

Supreme Court to hear Powell seating case against House

The Supreme Court agreed to decide if the House illegally barred Adam Clayton Powell from his seat in the 90th Congress. The case centers on the March 1 1967 vote denying Powell the seat over charges of misusing funds and defying committees. Zond 6 Returns From Moon Flyby With New Reentry Method

Soviet news agency Tass announced Zond 6 safely landed in Soviet territory after a lunar orbit mission. The craft reportedly used aerodynamic lift for controlled descent, aiming for precise Earth contact with reduced overload, while noting earlier Zond 5 carried living organisms.

Reds Install Collective Lead After Dubcek Power Shift

In Prague the Czechoslovak Communist Party outlined a new line indicating collective leadership and reduced powers for Alexander Dubcek after a three day meeting. The CTK report noted weak points in the Stalinist era and admitted resistance to reforms while journalists and students protested Soviet pressure to abandon Dubcek’s program.

Rural Fire Department Logs Slow Weekend in Scottsdale

The Rural Fire Department reported only two calls in the Scottsdale area from Saturday noon to Monday morning. At 6:10 p.m. Saturday a report of a car on fire at 7300 E Shea turned out to be steam from a broken radiator hose. At 2:48 a.m. Sunday a trash container blaze at Cocopah School 6615 E Cholla caused no damage and the cause remains unknown.

Three Scottsdale rear end crashes injure two

Police reported three Sunday rear end collisions in Scottsdale leaving two persons slightly injured. Leona Young was injured when her car was hit from behind by Hildegund Walters near Camelback Road. Christina Treon was treated after hitting a parked car at Weldon Gilbreth’s home. Doris Wisshelm was injured in a collision with a parked vehicle at Ray Eaton’s residence. she was not cited.

Yuman donor gives heart as mother dies in transit

Maria Acosta of Sonora Mexico delivered a baby before dying from brain hemorrhage in Yuma. The heart was transplanted to Leo Allen Boyd of Staffordsville Ontario in Houston at St Johns Hospital in a two hour operation led by Dr. Denton Cooley. Baby and recipient were reported in satisfactory condition.

Obituary of Fredrick Howard Kuesel longtime NY Telephone

Fredrick Howard Kuesel 68 of Scottsdale died Sunday at Dotter's Hospital. A Brooklyn native, he spent 30 years with New York Telephone as a telephone and telegraph traffic engineer, retiring in 1951 and moving to Scottsdale. A WWII Army major, he graduated Amherst College in 1920 and was a former real estate broker in Scottsdale. Survived by wife Irene and four out of state siblings. Services 4 p.m. Tuesday at Messinger Mortuary Chapel. cremation to follow. Contributions suggested to Emphysema Research Foundation.

Milwaukee native Otto Hackbarth dies in Scottsdale

Otto Hackbarth of 8350 E Indianola Milwaukee native and former Milwaukee businessman died Friday in Scottsdale. He chaired the Town of Milwaukee News founder editor and served 16 years on the National Labor Relations Board. A Marine WWI veteran he led a varied career as home builder farm owner flying school operator and U S Rubber Co employee. Survivors include his wife Jean and a brother out of state with services and interment in Milwaukee and donations to the Heart Fund requested.

Edith H Allers Dies at 70 in Valley Presbyterian Church Service

Edith H Allers 70 of 73 Mountain Shadows West died Saturday at Doctor's Hospital. Born in New York City she moved from Harrison New York to the area in 1955. Survived by husband Christian G a son George C of Scottsdale three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services set for 11 am Wednesday at Valley Presbyterian Church with cremation to follow.
