A light plane crash near Buckeye killed Scottsdale resident Richard Harper 26, an Salt River Project engineer, and two fraternity brothers. Harper was aboard a Cessna 172 traveling with the group late last night.
A hearing on a restraining order against Scottsdale enforcing its liquor tax ordinance was postponed to June 10. The temporary order remains in effect, blocking liquor licensees from paying the levy while the suit argues the ordinance is illegal.
Reports from Dacca warn of 10 000 to 15 000 dead as authorities race to tally casualties from a cyclone and tidal surge along a 178 mile stretch of the Bay of Bengal. Officials fear widespread loss on offshore islands and 2 million homeless.
Americans faced a possible highway-death record during the long Memorial Day weekend with 170 lives lost in the first 42 hours of the 102 hour period that began Wednesday at 6 p.m. The National Safety Council estimated total fatalities between 450 and 460.

Kathy Lynn Martin and Donald Allen Martin, ages 7 and 2, were fatally injured in Globe. The crashes prompted warnings of a new holiday death record.
Vatican officials announce the pope, 81, lapsed into coma amid cancerous stomach tumor complications. He received last rites and extreme unction as doctors and cardinals gathered. a late bulletin warned of a further worsening condition with reports of internal bleeding and anemia.
Photographs of the ill fated nuclear submarine Thresher lying in 8000 feet of water off the New England coast will be flown to a Navy board of inquiry. The images were taken by the Lamont laboratory ship Conrad which located the Thresher about 220 miles east of Boston. The Thresher sank April 10 with 129 men aboard. The board will study the photos at Portsmouth New Hampshire and decide whether to send the bathyscaph Trieste to the scene to take more pictures. The Trieste holds the diving record of 33800 feet.
The city sued Wild Bill's Inc a night club at 7116 E Becker Ln for failing to pay 1 percent city sales tax from December to April. The annexed area makes the business subject to city ordinances. The case, filed by City Attorney Osmond Burton Jr, forms part of a broader challenge by 13 Scottsdale restaurants and bars against the liquor tax ordinance in Superior Court. The penalty for nonpayment is up to $300 fine and or six months in jail.
A clash between pickets and police at a Philadelphia school site left two officers cut and about 200 demonstrators injured as Negro protesters demanded skilled jobs. The violence followed a tense stand two hours before a seven point agreement to hire a qualified Negro plumber and desegregate public works.
