UPI reports three government readings show little progress in taming inflation. May wholesale prices rose led by food costs, while the trade surplus narrowed to 177.5 million. Consumers planned strong purchases of cars and homes, signaling continued inflation risk and a slow-acting anti inflation plan.
Deadline nears for the Phoenix Zoo fifth annual summer institute for third to eighth graders. The six week course starts June 9 and runs 8 am to noon one day weekly through July 18 with lectures on animals and care plus arts and crafts projects. Cost is 14 dollars per student, 12 dollars for society members. certificates and live painted turtles awarded.
Three individuals Russell Webb Knarr Hendrickson and Cheryl Troup had illegal possession of marijuana charges dismissed by Scottsdale Justice Harold Holcomb. The incidents occurred last month with the three cases dismissed. Steven Troup husband of Cheryl bound over to superior court for marijuana possession. Robert D. Ores bound over for receiving stolen vehicle Robert Wood bound over for grand theft and John Colin bound over for receiving stolen property.

James L. Toman, a California coach and physical education teacher from Sarita Monica High School, was hired by the Scottsdale school district as associate director of health physical education and athletics for 15,500 dollars per year. He previously directed health and athletics in Van Buren Maine Villa Park Th and other districts. The district screened 35 applicants led by Dr Richard M Fawley and others. Dr E G Burnkrant recommended Toman to the board, with starts in July.
Dr. John W. Stuckey, 47, of Scottsdale, died when his twin engine Aero Commander crashed into a mountain 17 miles southeast of the area. Lt. Osborne Morris said it appeared Stuckey lost power or control. David L. Smith, Tempe businessman, said they flew to Willcox to retrieve the aircraft, with Smith piloting a Cessna 210. Smith reported no radio contact after takeoff. A Williams AFB student pilot spotted the wreckage. Stuckey lived at 2355 N 81st Way and is survived by his wife Madelyn, three daughters and two sons.

James Alworth Hartman 55 of 75 W Ist St remained in fair condition in Scottsdale Baptist Hospital ICU after being struck by a pickup while crossing Scottsdale Road near Indian School Road about 10 20 p m Witnesses said Hartman attempted to run across the road and was hit by a northbound truck driven by 21 year old John E Tkach of Tempe Police reported no citations issued
Chief Murray praises quick response times but questions a Tuesday incident. Log shows crew dispatched at 4 12 p m, recalled at 4 14 p m and returned to station at 4 10 p m.
Israeli planes fought Syrian MIGs over Quneitra in the Golan Heights and shot down a fighter. Ground battles continued in Quneitra with earlier clashes marking a renewed flare up since the Six Day War. Rockets from Arabs hit Jericho as shelling and exchanges occurred along the cease-fire line. An Israeli spokesman said Syrian planes tried to penetrate Israeli air space and were intercepted.
Michael P. Goodman, 19, Tempe, organizer of an experimental college at Arizona State University, was placed on six months probation after being convicted of defrauding an innkeeper. He faced six months of jail if arrested for a non traffic offense within the probation period.
President Nixon announced creation of a cabinet level Environmental Quality Council and a 15 member citizens advisory committee to coordinate a major pollution fight. The council, led by the president with key cabinet members, aims to dispose of waste problems and study environmental health issues while planning for future safeguards.
Dr Daniel T Fridena Jr, his wife Christine and Merle Jones were arrested after a scuffle as officers attempted to serve a writ of restitution at Phoenix Community Hospital. Fridena faced two felonies and the others misdemeanors. bonds set at 550 and 330 dollars.
Fire dept reports a $2,500 house fire on Wednesday in Scottsdale caused by gasoline fumes near a hot water heater at Gus Pappas home 2835 N 82nd St. Firemen battled multiple brush fires and smaller incidents across the area including Granite Reef McDonald Dr and 66th Pl Monterey Way and Scottsdale Rd. The blaze at Pappas home was under control upon arrival.
NATO defense chiefs in London discuss Canada's plan to withdraw bulk of forces in Europe and its impact on policy. The seven nation nuclear planning group reviews nuclear strategy versus conventional arms and coordinates with an Anglo German plan. Melvin R. Laird urged Canada to reconsider force reductions.
