Sen. David Kret defended blocking a GOP reapportionment plan citing Scottsdale needs better representation in the state legislature. He traded four Phoenix precincts for four in Scottsdale, seeks a solid Scottsdale district, and plans to revisit the issue in 1972.
Corrine Audrey Ott, 19, of Tempe, died in a two car crash at McKillips Road and Scottsdale Road. Gary Horton, 24, Tempe, was critically injured. Investigators say Ott failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a vehicle driven by Allan Sheppard, 19, of Phoenix, who was uninjured.
Government offices and public schools will close tomorrow for Memorial Day. Motorola plants in Scottsdale Phoenix and Dickson Electronics plant will close as part of a four day holiday weekend. Scottsdale banks utilities offices and most retail stores will also be closed. The Progress will publish as usual.
United Press International reports that during the Memorial Day weekend at least 543 people have died in traffic related incidents. Nine deaths occurred in Arizona since Friday and the national toll reaches 226 for 1987, 25 fewer than last year on the same date.
Douglas Goldie 21 and sister Laura 19 were in a boat that struck a rock and sank at Apache Lake. They suffered cuts, bruises and possible chest injuries, were rescued by a passing boat, flown by helicopter to Mesa hospitals, and later moved to Southside District Hospital in Mesa where they were confirmed to be doing well.
Arizona Home Builders Association members will meet the mayor and city council at 8 p m tonight to discuss Scottsdale's master plan. Lee A Syracuse from the national association will fly in from Washington DC to participate amid concerns there will be little land left for tract homes by 1970. Viet Cong mortar barrages struck the Hue U S military compound and the Inter national Control Commission hotel with no injuries among occupants. A U S 25th Infantry Division brigade 320 miles northeast of Saigon faced heavy attack, with twenty nine Viet Cong reported killed.
Gov Jack Williams signed a proclamation calling the Arizona Legislature into a special session on Wednesday to discuss reapportionment. Republican leaders say a plan is agreed and will pass quickly.
