Oldest Floating Block Party Keeps Christmas Spirit Alive

In Scottsdale the 8400 and 8500 blocks of East Turkey Avenue plan their 10th or 11th year of holiday block parties. Started around 1961 by Bill Johnson Jim Lewis and Ed Hallman the event grew from Memorial Day casual gatherings to labor day and memorial day weekends with steak fries and desert fries in winter. Neighbors say the neighborhood now includes over 20 families and nearly 70 children with multiple pools and organized activities.

Motorcycle and minibike crashes injure two youths

An 18 year old Michael Bleavins of 612 W Highland was cited after his motorcycle failed to stop at a sign and struck a curb before crashing into a fence near Scottsdale Baptist Hospital where he was treated. A 12 year old Brian Mercer of 6009 E Osborn was taken to Scottsdale Baptist Hospital and later to Barrow's Neurological Clinic in Phoenix for a concussion and facial lacerations after his mini bike crashed on Paiute School grounds. He was cited under a city ordinance banning mini bike use on streets and school grounds.

German train crash kills 45 schoolchildren and five adults

A two car freight collision in West Germany killed 40 children and five adults returning from a graduation outing. Authorities blamed human error and a freight engineer who allegedly ran red signals on a single track by the Wupper river near Bremen.

Phoenix Woman Arrested on Four Warrants in Scottsdale

Scottsdale police arrested 52 year old Quida Hooke from Phoenix on four warrants including insufficient funds failure to appear and attachment. Detained at 86th Street north of Sells Drive at 10 21 a m Thursday. Bail set at 1100 in Scottsdale Justice Court.

Police arrest 33 year old Dan Scarborough at 4626 N Scottsdale Rd after his car hit a Good Will Industries truck in Fashion Square parking lot. Earlier, the vehicle collided with a 1970 Chevrolet, struck a guy wire and caused a power failure. Bond set at $165.

Phoenix Chapter to Host Three Day Airborne Meet at Camelback Inn

The Phoenix Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association hosts a three day gathering at Camelback Inn this weekend to mark Arizona Airborne Day proclaimed by Gov. Williams. Events include a Saturday registration and parachute jump, a Governor’s Trophy jump on Sunday by Billy Lockridge, a 2500 foot drop onto a cross target, a 10 am jump contest, a beer bust, and a Prophy Banquet and dance at 7:30 pm in the main dining room.

Yuba City Murder Toll Ris es to Twenty with Graves Foliage

In Yuba City California sheriff Roy Whiteaker said more bodies may be buried in orchards along the Feather River as crews with a trench digger continued the grim search over a week after the first bodies appeared. Juan Corona a 37 year old farm labor contractor was arrested and charged with murder. Five victims were tentatively identified including Don Smith Bill Kemp James Howard Jonas Smallwood and Elliott Riley. The victims aged 40 to 63 were believed to be transient farm workers and most likely Anglos with one possible Black victim. Whiteaker could not discuss evidence or witnesses and said the digging would continue until recoveries end.

Police report two suspects were arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct after an incident on 77th Street and Moreland. Officer David Isom encountered a mud covered, unconscious man on the ground. The youth spat in Isom’s face twice while being booked, and a second man identified as 21 year old Encarnacino Martinez of 1226 77th Pl was also involved.

Weather snapshot shows frost, storms across U.S.

United Press International reports diverse weather across the nation. Frost warnings in the upper Midwest contrasts with severe storms in the Southwest. Showers sweep from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast with hail and high winds concentrated in New Mexico and Texas. Brownwood, Texas, reports downed trees and power lines as more than two inches of rain drenched the city.

Man Receives Citation for Rescue Attempt in Canal

John Parsons of 5311 N Zath St was honored by City Manager Dale Carter for attempting to rescue Robert Wayne Murphy after Murphy’s car plunged into the Arizona Canal on May 18. Police say the car struck the canal rim, traveled about 160 feet, and sank in darkness. Murphy’s body was later recovered. Murphy lived at 6945 C B Osborn Rd, and his death marked the third fatality in six months near Indian School Road and the Crosscut Canal.
