Vatican reports cautiously optimistic signs while noting the pope, 81, remains very ill. He is lucid, has conferred with Cardinal Cicognani, and is under continuous medical care amid renewed internal bleeding within a week.
Sen. Frank E. Moss a strong backer of federal aid to public schools said the proposal has slim odds this year due to religious controversy over aid to parochial schools. He urged expanding aid to federally impacted areas and extending eligibility for two years.
The Indianapolis News poll of 707 replies from 1,331 former GOP delegates shows Sen. Barry Goldwater as the preferred candidate for the 1964 Republican nomination with 48 percent. Gov. Nelson Rockefeller trails with 34.5 percent, while Gov. George Romney and others garner smaller shares.

A. J. Collins 41 former Joliet Chamber executive director was named manager of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and will begin July 1 at a 10000 annual salary. He led Joliet’s Land Clearance Commission for 22 years and has held multiple business roles in Kentucky and Joliet. Collins’ selection followed 16 local and 538 applicants nationwide. background checks and interviews preceded the appointment.
The Supreme Court ordered Memphis to desegregate parks libraries and museums immediately and criticized southern states for slow school integration. It rejected gradual opening plans and upheld prompt desegregation as required. The court also rejected Gov. Wallace's claim about federal troops in Birmingham and granted a hearing for Dion Diamond on a 1962 boycott case.
Jackson officials plan a 4 pm grievance meeting with Negro leaders to decide if massive racial demonstrations will occur in the Mississippi capital. Medgar Evers says a later mass meeting will hear the session results as Antisegregation actions had been delayed, with Mayor Thompson pledging to preserve segregation.
Rodney Dee Brodie, once deemed a miracle to survive a head-twin separation, died at 11 after malnutrition and brain-body coordination failure. Born in East Moline Illinois in 1951, he and Roger Lee survived initial separation attempts by surgeons at the University of Illinois hospital, but Roger Lee did not.
