Southern conservatives rally around Warren Burger as Chief Justice while signaling discontent over James Allen’s education post. They claim Nixon’s team sought loyal appointees and left decisions to cabinet members, asserting the Burger nomination reflects political expedience rather than a unified ideology.
Washington UPI reports the Labor Action LALA alliance, formed by Teamsters and UAW after the auto workers split from AFL CIO, held its first anniversary meeting with about 500 delegates at the Washington Hilton. Speakers urged a new direction to tackle social ills and domestic needs and called for an end to the Vietnam War.
Eighth graders at Ingleside Kaibab Hopi and Arcadia high schools are set for graduation ceremonies this week with dances and after events. Kaibab and Hopi schools announce PTA officers, safety programs, library plans, summer activities, student elections and youth fitness recognitions.
Mild to warm weather dominated much of the nation but unseasonably chilly conditions lingered from parts of the upper Midwest to northern New England. Showers dotted the north Pacific Coast and Northeast with cold fronts. northern Great Plains saw showers and locally heavy thunderstorms.
Adolphus Leon Mincey 57 died Friday in a Phoenix hospital after living in Arizona eight years. Born in Hillsborough North Carolina he moved to Syracuse New York then to Arizona. Survivors include wife Evelyn two sons Mark Kevin three daughters Alice Walburger of Lafayette Louisiana Joyce Zink of Tangsland New York and Frieda Jones of Tempe a brother and two sisters and six grandchildren.
Students must register by Wednesday for June 9 classes. Elementary registrations at Education Center Annex 8811 N 44th St from 8 am to 4 pm. High schoolers register 8 am to 3 30 pm at Scottsdale High School bookstore.
LA faces a bruising mayoral race between Sam Yorty and Thomas Bradley with Bradley seeking to become the city’s first black mayor. Polls show Bradley ahead at times but Yorty gains late support as City Clerk predicts turnout near 75 percent of 1,127,224 eligible voters, topping last month’s record.
Scottsdale and Camelback Jaycees dominated the Arizona Jaycee convention at Tempe Scottsdale earned top honors across 12 population class categories and seven firsts plus four seconds in overall competition Camelback won 12 firsts in its class with individual awards to Dave Hawkins and Larry Andrews Scottsdale's Charlie Smith was named outstanding local president and Jim Greene state spark plug Camelback claimed multiple project wins and will host the next state board meeting while Gordon Smith of Camelback earned the Cow Chip award for poise.
