Senate OKs Gold Dollar Bill to Replace Silver Certificates
The Senate passed legislation to replace $1 and $2 silver certificates with Federal Reserve notes backed by 25 percent gold. Treasury officials say rising silver costs and shortages necessitate the move, with 1.6 billion ounces of bullion to back new coins for about 18 years. The measure, approved 68 to 10, is to be phased in after Kennedy signs. Some critics warn of potential currency devaluation.
