Cost of living rises while real earnings hit yearly low
UPI reports April sees a six tenths of 1 percent rise in the consumer price index and a six tenths drop in real spendable earnings to the year's lowest level. The 12 month CPI rise reaches 5.4 percent, the largest since 1951, with food prices driving much of the increase as meats poultry and fish jump 1.6 percent from March and 2.4 percent since January.

Resort hotel zoning approved by city council
City Council approved zoning changes for a 40 acre area at the northwest corner of 68th Street and Camelback Road to allow a resort hotel development or service residential project. Flood control measures were pledged and detailed site plans will be drawn later. The panel also approved plans for a Cuties Products plant in Thunderbird Industrial Park and professional offices on Avalon Drive. A car wash on Scottsdale Road was approved with a no self serve gas pump condition. The Doubletree Inn expansion by 100 rooms received a zoning affirmation.

Arthur Aaron 72 an infantry veteran died Wednesday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. He served 31 years in the U S Army before retiring and belonged to American Legion Post 44 in Scottsdale and World War I Barracks 1242 in Mesa. Funeral 1 p m at Green Acres Mortuary with burial at Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the mortuary tonight and Friday. He is survived by his wife Florence of Scottsdale and three siblings all out of state.

Grass fire damages shed and contents near Paradise Valley
A grass fire spread to a storage shed at 6325 N. Invergordon, damaging about 1500 dollars of the shed and its contents containing tires gasoline and tools. Paradise Valley Water Co. owned the shed. Firemen also doused a small blaze in a car back seat on Tatum Blvd and a trash bin fire on Garfield. Illegal burning incidents were reported at Larkspur Scottsdale Rd and at McDowell Rd and 75th St.

Street closed for repairs near Van Buren to McDowell
Phoenix traffic engineer Charles Haley announced a street closure on Fifty-Second Street from Van Buren to McDowell through today and Friday from 8 a.m. The completion of a dip reconstruction a quarter mile north of Van Buren requires the restriction. Detours will use Van Buren or McDowell to 48th Street or Galvin Parkway. Access to the Motorola Plant will be maintained from McDowell Road.

Crash at Camelback and Hinton Injures Two Drivers
At about 2 15 p m Wednesday a two vehicle crash at Camelback Road and Hinton injured both drivers. William Nichols 19 admitted to Scottsdale Baptist Hospital in good condition after his 1965 truck collided with George Bernier 30 of Phoenix driving an eastbound car. Bernier’s car hit a fence at 7246 E Camelback. Nichols was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The truck sustained 1500 dollars of damage while Bernier’s sedan suffered 2000 dollars.
