Apollo 10 astronauts near moon prepare for orbit

Space Center Houston reports Apollo 10 crew Thomas Stafford John Cernan and Eugene Cernan nearing 19 879 miles from the moon as they approach lunar orbit. They plan to fire engines to enter orbit at 4 45 p m EDT and perform two skim passes within 10 miles of the surface while testing landing sites for Apollo 11.

Soviets unveil faster-than-sound airliner to world

The TU 144, first supersonic commercial aircraft, wowed about 300 foreign reporters in Moscow as designer Alexei Tupolev said trials were stringent but the craft is not yet ready to break the sound barrier. The U S awaits its own supersonic model while the TU 144 edges ahead.

Multiple Minor Fires Reported Around City Afternoon Fires

Rural firemen answered four calls Tuesday afternoon. Damage from the fence fire behind 8195 E Palm Lane totaled 20 dollars. A flower bed blaze behind 8120 E Indianola was started by a boy with matches. no damage but minor burns. Firefighters also cooled an alley fire behind 86th Street and Catalina and a field blaze at Granite Reef and McDonald.

Kennedy letter urges mercy in Sirhan Sirhan case

UPI reports Senator Edward M Kennedy urged clemency for Sirhan Sirhan, seeking to spare the life of the man condemned to death for the murder of Robert Kennedy. The letter was presented to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Herbert W Walker before sentencing, while Sirhan smoked and listened in court.

Roosevelt wife granted bail after stabbing case

Geneva reports that Mrs. Saralee Roosevelt, wife of the late president’s son, was granted temporary freedom on a $12,500 bail in connection with an attempted murder charge. Her attorney said she would post the bond, and she was later moved to a private room at Bel-Air Psychiatric.

Army Admits Open Air Tests With Lethal Gases

The Army acknowledged open air testing of deadly chemical agents but said no sprays from aircraft occurred since March 1968. Tests involved firing shells that released agents, with one shell set 50 feet above ground. Sheep deaths in Utah’s Skull Valley in March 1968 remain not fully explained.
