Astronaut L Gordon Cooper, 36, completes the 22.9 orbit Mercury mission from Cape Canaveral toward Pacific splashdown. Recovery forces, ships, and aircraft are positioned as NASA warns retrofire timing is crucial for a safe return.
Officials said L. Gordon Cooper could have to steer Faith 7 by hand if the automatic stabilization system fails. A gravity indicator light on the gyroscope system flashed during Cooper’s 20th Earth orbit, prompting technicians at Cape Canaveral to await his assessment at 12:15 p.m. local time.
About 30 delegates from civic groups including the League of Women Voters met at the Hotel Valley Ho to hear city officials outline a plan to reannex a six square mile eastside area that would provide Scottsdale with about half its tax base.
