Tragic Car Train Crash Claims Ten Near Mesa Arizona

A Southern Pacific mail express train struck a crossing wagon carrying two Phoenix sisters Lola King and Ina Lowe and their eight children, killing all ten. Investigators blamed a failure to see signals at Baseline Road crossing five miles south of Mesa in clear weather. The Lowes were en route shopping. Mrs Lowe was nine months pregnant with another child. The King family had been visiting Phoenix. No train passengers were harmed. Two other Arizonans died in separate crashes: John Farnsworth in Winslow and Timberley White near Casa Grande.
