Sweden Grants Asylum to Nine More U S Servicemen

The Swedish Aliens Commission says asylum has been granted to nine additional American servicemen who fled to Sweden amid Vietnam era protests. An ADC spokesman estimates about 80 GIs are in exile, with many avoiding authorities. Over a dozen have recently returned to their units in the U S or Europe.

Coronado High Plans Dons Day Activities

Coronado High School will sponsor a Dons Day at Eldorado Park on Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. Events include bucket race Buck Buck championships ice race pony express tug of war and softball finals. Awards will be presented at the Coronado Awards Assembly on May 27. The event is organized by the Student Council.

Mountain States, Do l JA sign three year labor pacts

Mountain States Telephone Co announced new three year labor contracts covering about 14 300 plant and traffic employees in seven states. The pacts must be ratified by union members by May 31 and take retroactive effect to May 9. Wages rise range from five to twelve dollars weekly for plant craftsmen and four to eight dollars for traffic workers with annual steps. Exchanges upgraded include Tucson Colorado Springs Brighton Evergreen Lafayette and El Paso. Fringe benefits include life insurance vacations pensions and two medical plans. Bargaining with CWA began April 15.

Ridge miners link to surface in dramatic rescue effort

In Hominy Falls West Virginia two rescued miners and 13 others trapped deeper in the mine after a shaft flooded. Foreman Frank Davis and Edward Rudd crawled 0.4 miles through 10 inches of water to connect with the higher group, as surface teams worked to install a high speed pump.

Five alarms answer calls as Scottsdale fires burn

Rural firefighters extinguished four fires in the Scottsdale area on Thursday and one today. The only damage to property came from a redwood fence at 146 West First Street, about 25 dollars. Other blazes included a canalbank fire behind Camelback Mall Theater at 7033 East Camelback Road, a Bluebird Street home fire at 6601 East Bluebird, and a residence on Orchid Lane at 5051 that was blamed on an oven short. A broken gas line at 5027 North 77th Street tied to underground work prompted a temporary fire watch.

Custom saddle and bridle stolen from residence

A custom saddle and bridle valued at 350 dollars were stolen Thursday from Frederick Greenwald's home at 9222 N 75th St. Police said the items were taken from a work room at the rear of the house between 3 30 p m and 5 30 p m with no signs of forced entry.

Army to train 200000 reservists for riot duty nationwide

The Army announced immediate riot training for 200000 Army reserve personnel, boosting trained civilian soldiers to over 500000 for civil disturbance duty. More than 300000 National Guardsmen already have such training, with 60000 reservists exempted.
