Dollar Drops as Brandt Rules Out Devaluation

BONN UPI The dollar sagged again in quiet private trading as West German Chancellor Willy Brandt said Washington would not devalue the dollar to aid Germany and Europe. Brandt, touring from London, planned an emergency cabinet session to address the latest monetary crisis. Basel bankers from West Europe were set to discuss the situation Sunday. The United States remained firm on not altering its dollar gold relationship.

European finance ministers weigh response to German crisis

In Brussels experts met in a crisis atmosphere ahead of an emergency Saturday meeting of the six member nations. Dutch Finance Minister Henrik Witteveen said the Hague session would seek a solution to Germany's difficulties by choosing the lesser evil. Holland fears a mark revaluation or a float upward.

Nixon backs 250 million loan guarantee for Lockheed

Treasury Secretary Connally said President Nixon would ask Congress to guarantee 250 million in loans to save Lockheed Aircraft from bankruptcy. He noted British support of 288 million for Rolls Royce RB 211 engine production and warned 1.4 billion already invested could be lost. Proposals to Congress expected Tuesday.

Police clash with demonstrators at JFK Building protest

In Boston police charged into antiwar protesters outside the JFK Federal Building after a three hour standoff with about 4,000 demonstrators. About 50 people were arrested as officers pushed the crowd back and a police sweep cleared the area.

Miller to Receive Moeur Award at ASU Alumni Breakfast

Douglas K. Miller of 5608 E. Horseshoe Lane will receive Arizona State University’s Moeur Award at the annual alumni breakfast. The political science major earned straight A grades in 109 credit hours over seven semesters and has been accepted to Stanford Law next fall.

Fire damages total over two Scottsdale area sites

A grease fire in an apartment at 4925 N Tard St caused 1500 dollars in damage with smoke spread through the unit, while a rear-store room blaze at The Safeway, 2801 N Scottsdale Rd, caused 1000 dollars damage and was extinguished by the store sprinkler system as Rural Fire Department units arrived. cause of the Scottsdale fire remains unknown.
