Navy Secretary John H. Chafee announces the Pueblo court of inquiry findings and rejects further legal action. He says disciplinary outcomes against Bucher Harris Murphy Johnson Gladding are sufficient and no new prosecutions are warranted.
Secretary Chafee said Bucher’s future command depends on his performance, after the Pueblo skipper avoided discipline despite a court of inquiry recommending court martial for Bucher and another Pueblo officer. Harris, relieved at avoidance of trial, will join the Naval Communications Command in Washington.
Salt River Project announced changes to lake drawdowns on the Salt River. Apache Lake will drop to 23 feet below maximum, not 45, with no rise to that level until October and refilling planned for February. Canyon Lake drydown remains after Memorial Day from August to November. The draws provide room for water to pass through Roosevelt Dam generators while keeping the river below Apache dry.
Reports describe National Guard troops on telephone standby in New Orleans and police alert in Highland Park Michigan amid student demonstrations. About 800 black students in Montgomery Alabama vowed to remain jailed after arrests, while Chicago Wisconsin and Indiana campuses faced violence and tuition protests.
A New York to Miami National Airlines flight carrying 75 passengers was hijacked by two well dressed men. One flashed a 238 caliber pistol while the other brandished an eight inch knife. The pair forced the plane toward Cuba and it returned to the United States with the hijackers on board. The aircraft landed in Havana for about four hours before resuming to Miami arriving at 12:05 a.m. EDT.
Tokyo based reports say 410 people died in automobile crashes on Japan's highways during the four day holiday ending Monday. An estimated 20 million Japanese visited beaches parks zoos and mountain resorts, causing traffic jams over ten miles long.
Police reported siblings Kurt Meyer 13 and Gregg Meyer 10 were slightly hurt Monday when the car carrying their sister Marsha Lynn Meyer 17 was struck at 64th Street and Camelback Road. The Meyers were passengers in the sister’s car which failed to yield and was hit by a car driven by Carl Meckstroth 44. The impact pushed the Meyer car into John Roy Ward 23’s vehicle. No further injuries noted and no citations issued.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences released nominations for the 21st Emmy awards in over 30 categories. Series such as the controversial Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour are shortlisted despite cancellations, with two programs moving to another network. The awards ceremony will be televised by CBS on June 8.
Thomas Andrew Barth 65 died Monday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. A Cleveland native who moved to the valley in 1968, he served in the Navy submarine force 1920-24 and studied metallurgy at Syracuse. He worked for Earth Corp from 1932 to 1962 and held several lodge and shrine memberships. Survivors include Olive M Barth. two daughters Lois Pitzer and Jacqueline Baldwin. seven grandchildren. and siblings in Ohio. Services Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Messinger Mortuary. interment in Brecksville Ohio.
Police report three coin operated vending machines at Al Johnson's Gulf station on Hayden Road were broken into with an undetermined cash amount taken between Monday evening and 6:20 am. About 80 dollars in edifice and three payroll checks worth 520 dollars were stolen from Norman Bodnar's home on Granite Reef Road around 1:30 pm Monday.
Labor Secretary George P. Shultz told a Senate subcommittee the Nixon Administration opposes a bill giving agricultural workers the right to organize under the National Labor Relations Act. He proposed a Farm Labor Relations Board to handle elections and unfair labor practices for farms with over 500 man-days, and noted the harvest strike threat worries farmers while unions insist on strike rights for agriculture.
United Press reports multiple tornadoes touched down in west Texas and east central Kansas and Nebraska with accompanying heavy rains. A near Morton Texas alert lingered in Deaf Smith and Potter counties as the storm system spawned funnel clouds and strong storms. Deluges in southeast Louisiana dumped nearly 14 inches in six hours at Boothville and New Orleans while temperatures and weather varied from Arizona to Minnesota.
City officials meet in Kingman for a conference on a model sales tax ordinance from the League of Cities. The plan would help multi city businesses and allow cities to collect one percent of the four percent tax within their borders, supporting Scottsdale's budget and state tax sharing. The conference includes State Sen. Dave Kret and other city leaders with Brad Simon acting as city manager in Scottsdale.
Fire officials announce bicycle licensing at Scottsdale Station on weekdays from 3 to 5 p.m and Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon. Several residents have visited in recent weeks seeking registration and left disappointed by unavailable hours.
