The intersection of Scottsdale and Thomas roads will close to all traffic Monday from 4 a.m. to at least 6 p.m. to complete paving. Traffic on all four approaches will detour due to no nearby by passes, with motorists urged to reroute around the area during the closure.
Washington dispatch reports the Geneva Laos talks expand into a high stakes East West propaganda clash. United States officials prepare a counter campaign to rebut Communist charges of U.S. aggression over military aid to rapidly anti-communist governments in Laos South Vietnam and Thailand. The 14 nation conference would open next Friday if a Laos ceasefire is in effect.
Six people fleeing a flood from a farmhouse near Ashland Ohio drowned when their overloaded outboard boat capsized on the Mohican River. Four bodies were recovered south of Ashland as divers searched for missing Grace Perry and Pete Alleman. Victims were Susie Alleman 16 Larry 20 Sam Perry and Frank Hudgins 4 all from two related families.
Late News from Miami reports a Cuban war craft sunk after striking an unidentified object off western Cuba. All Cuban ships and planes in the zone have been ordered to sweep the seas clear of any ships in the area.
In Laos, cease fire discussions between government forces and the Pathet Lao collapsed after five hours without agreement. Concurrently, Communist-led troops launched assaults against pro-government Meo guerrillas behind rebel lines, overrunning a command post and attacking Padong in Xieng Khouang province.
The Arizona Senate liquor study committee postponed final recommendations on liquor law changes until May 18 and 19. Proposals discussed included higher license fees and a ban on liquor sales at the state fairground, plus a hotel motel and resort license provision. The panel prepared technical questions for the Attorney General and aims to draft a bill via the Legislative Council.

President Kennedy will award astronaut Alan B. Shepard NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal, the agency’s top honor. A 7 a.m. MST ceremony and 10 a.m. MST news conference at the White House will be broadcast nationwide. Shepard arrives from Grand Bahama Island for medical checks and will be greeted by Kennedy and the first family.

President Kennedy to ask Congress for accelerated space program funding as the U S remains behind the Soviet Union in space. A White House ceremony will honor Shepard and six other astronauts with live broadcasts planned. The House Space Committee has already added 126.6 million to the budget, signaling strong support.
Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba is resting for several days due to fatigue and chronic bronchitis. His son Habib Jr says he will stay in Washington before traveling to New York for the planned visit. The president also has laryngitis and is ordered to avoid talking, communicating by writing.
A Maricopa Superior Court jury acquitted Ronald St John by reason of insanity in the double murder of two field hands. He is remanded to County Jail for a sanity hearing with Judge Fred Hyder to set the date after a lengthy deliberation begun Friday.
Advertising salesmen of the Scottsdale Daily Progress Trade Area Directory will begin Monday offering display space to local merchants. Mike Hughes said Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler businessmen have responded enthusiastically to the book with county wide distribution. At least 150 000 copies will be printed to reach all households including apartments and ranches. The directory will include business listings and information important to households.
