Arcadia High School seniors organize an all night celebration after graduation at a Paradise Valley club with breakfast around 4 30 am. PTA and district officials distance from the event while Sympathy Sam urges action and orderly conduct.
Embattled Melrose Meadows homeowners led by Don Puente seek an informal meeting with a city council member and planning commissioner. After two hours of debate Tuesday, the council sent the apartment zoning proposal back to the planning and zoning commission and will revisit it next Tuesday following a commission recommendation. The commission previously urged zoning with alterations to building heights. The council will study the revised plans Monday to see if they meet requested changes.
The Scotts dale Parks and Recreation Department won approval for a tentative budget from the parks commission last night with no total figure released. It must be reviewed by the city manager before city council submission and contemplates annexation of seven grade schools and Coronado High School. It funds recreation at the new Paiute School on West Osborn as well as existing programs at the Community Center Loloma Supai and Scottsdale High.
Thirteen survivors including skipper Capt. Christopher B. Sheldon arrive aboard the Grand Rio in Tampa after the 93 ton Albatross sank in a Gulf of Mexico storm. The ill fated sailing prep school ship carried 16 youths and two instructors. six lives were lost. Sheldon reported no further survivors possible.

Tomorrow is the final day to register to vote in the 23 million county bond election set for May 23. Real property taxpayers who have lived in the state a year and 30 days in their voting precinct may register at the justice of the peace in Scottsdale or at the county election bureau in Phoenix. The bond funds would finance a new county hospital a new courthouse and jail administration offices in Scottsdale Glendale and Gilbert.
Cape Canaveral officials said America's first astronaut likely flies Friday morning aboard the Redstone rocket with Alan Shepard Jr. and the Mercury cabin. The countdown began at 6 30 a m MST and the 15 minute flight could lift off at 5 a m MST if weather holds.
