Rail strike extension pushed toward congressional pass
The measure to avert a nationwide rail strike was advanced by the House Commerce Committee as both chambers prepared to vote. The plan would delay a strike by 137,000 rail workers across six unions, potentially affecting 138 railroads and 95 percent of service. President Johnson pressed for emergency legislation and suggested a broader 47 day moratorium with possible compulsory arbitration or federal seizure. Leader Staggers warned action was imminent and noted the bill would supersede talks.
