In a daylong battle Israel and Jordan fought with tanks artillery and mortars along the Jordan River valley extending across 70 miles. Both sides claimed damage with Israel reporting damaging hits on Jordanian positions and Jordan stating Israeli planes were shot down.
Leslie J. McDonald 35 of Jamaica testified he killed his wife claiming an obeah spell made him love her. He argued he was still under the spell’s influence as the trial proceeded. A mix of regional conflicts and cease fire violations also surfaced in the report.

PHOENIX UP T One of three bank robbery suspects remained in fair condition after a shootout in which another suspect was killed and a third captured. David Price McIntosh 35 and James Black 42 both from Phoenix were wounded. McIntosh died, Black in fair condition, Walters 28 held by U S Marshal. The robbery of Valley National Bank Carefree branch totaled 52050 dollars. Bank manager Gary Gleason and assistant Cathy Blair were bound. tellers Mrs George Mileham and Mrs Mari Garvin joined them as the vault opened and cash was taken.
Water levels fluctuate as SRP moves water downstream to meet Valley orders. Roosevelt Dam releases about 600 cfs into Apache Lake while 400 cfs flows from Horse Mesa Dam into Canyon Lake and 100 cfs from Mormon Flat Dam into Saguaro Lake. No release planned into Granite Reef Diversion Dam channel.
Maree Westwood 84 longtime Valley resident died in a Phoenix nursing home after living in the area 23 years. Born in Tallula Illinois she came from Springfield Illinois and was a Seventh day Adventist. She is survived by three daughters Mrs Robert W. Combs Mayer Mrs Elton Hartenbower Kansas City and Mrs C L Gehres Phoenix six grandchildren five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Services were held at Mercer Mortuary with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

The United States released three captured North Vietnamese sailors to Hanoi after secret talks with North Vietnamese officials. The men, held since 1966, were flown from Vientiane to Hanoi on an ICC plane after a six hour stopover, with an ICRC representative present. Reports said they were treated well, though they claimed beatings and harsh confinement.
U S spokesmen warn plague may spread among North Vietnamese forces surrounding Khe Sanh and say rats feeding on corpses near the fort could carry it. Marines are inoculated with six month protection and a drive aims to vaccinate all personnel in Vietnam.
Pima Elementary School PTA members announce a $350 two year scholarship for a needy Pima graduate who will attend Scottsdale Junior College. Publicity chair Mrs. Marsha Usdane says funds come from PTA and the award will cover most tuition and books for two years beginning September 1969. Plans anticipate extension courses next fall with campus completion in 1970.

Eligible persons must register for Medicare by 9 p.m. Monday to be enrolled this year. Bernard Casey of the Scottsdale Social Security office cautions that those who miss the deadline cannot reapply until January 1969. The office at 30 Pima Plaza will stay open until 9 p.m. to assist.
