Laser beam guided strikes hit tanks in Laos and Laos battle

UPI reports U S planes using laser beams and computer guided air strikes knocked out 12 North Vietnamese tanks in Laos over two days. Air power also hit tanks near Sepone and near the Laos border as Khe Sanh faced heavy bombardment with rockets mortars and air attacks.

Weekend fires cause over a thousand dollars in damage

Three major fires over the weekend each caused more than $1,000 in damage while three minor fires also burned. A storeroom at 7532 E Cambridge owned by Oneida Macalusa reported $2,000 loss after a blaze started by an electrical wire on a bench saw igniting paint and thinner. A 1966 Pontiac at 2003 N Scottsdale Road sustained extensive damage when gas dripping onto a hot motor sparked interior fire. Minor fires included a fence burn at 8708 KB Highland causing $2 damage and a small blaze at the Vew Hall on Wells with $250 damage.

Whitney M Young body returns home from Nigeria

The 49 year old Whitney M Young executive director of the National Urban League died near Lagos Nigeria. A Nixon ordered Air Force jet brought the body to New York for public viewings at Riverside Church and a Harlem motorcade before a Louisville viewing and Lexington burial with a Nixon funeral eulogy.

Weekend burglaries probe in Scottsdale

Two burglaries reported over the weekend are under investigation by the Scottsdale Police Department. At Apache School 1201 N 85th St a television set and five cases of soft drinks were stolen from the teachers lounge between 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday entry gained by breaking a window with a rock valued at 202 dollars. At Hall Park near Pima Road and McDonald Drive burglars damaged roof boards kicked out ceiling tiles and took several games from the control building damaging two ping pong tables with no damage estimate provided.

Suspect Arrested in Rosy Circle Child Mistreatment Case

Scottsdale police arrest 23 year old Stanley Atwood Sunday at Rose Circle and 63rd Street in a case linked to a February 28 incident described as exposure and child mistreatment. He was released on 560 dollars bail from City Court with a March 24 hearing set for 8 15 a.m.

Tornadoes, storms sweep Midwest amid record heat

United Press International reports tornadoes and severe thunderstorms across the Midwest on Sunday. Unseasonably warm air produced temperatures up to 101 degrees in McAllen Texas while Missouri Illinois and Indiana saw tornado watches and reports of minor injuries and limited damage near Kirkland and Gorham Illinois and west of St. Louis.

Scottsdale Library hosts trio of photography technique lectures

The Scottsdale Public Library at 3839 Civic Center Plaza presents three lectures starting tonight at 7 30 PM. Elmer leads the first on color natural and aerial photography and processing from concept to final image, while Rittershaus discusses his black and white work and darkroom techniques on March 22 and 29.

Tims Re elected to Regional Councils Board in New Orleans

Tims was re elected to the board of directors of the Association of Regional Councils at its fifth annual conference in New Orleans attended by 800 mayors and county officials. The meeting centered on revenue sharing with HUD proposals to consolidate grants into regional parcel funding. Tom Bradley of Los Angeles was elected president of the Regional Council Association.

Phoenix man charged after attempt to defraud innkeeper

Kahley, 93, of Phoenix was arrested at Trader Vic's in Scottsdale on a charge of attempting to defraud an innkeeper. Police said he tried to leave without paying a bill, then attempted to sign the bar check. He was detained after a scuffle with officers and taken to Scottsdale Baptist Hospital for treatment of injuries. He later identified himself.
