Apollo 9 crew push toward return from a 10 day flight guided by fuel checks and Atlantic weather. McDivitt, Scott and Schweickart report rough seas and plan a Thursday splashdown while monitoring a 288 mile orbit and rehearsing lunar mission steps for Apollo 10.
Employment expanded for the fifth straight month in February, with nonfarm payrolls up 380,000 to about 70 million, a record monthly gain. Unemployment held at 3.3 percent with 2.9 million jobseekers, about one quarter seeking part-time work, and hours at 37.8 weekly.
Estill G Skinner 71 died Saturday in his Scottsdale home at 501 E 2nd St. He managed Scottsdale Apartments and moved to Arizona six years ago from Unionville Missouri. Born in Atlanta Missouri he graduated from Kirksville College and was a 49 year Mason in Unionville. Services and burial will be announced. Survivors include widow Anna a son Estill of Lemons Missouri three daughters Mrs Gerald Hodges Kahoka Missouri Mrs Edward Miller Talmyra Missouri and Mrs Jack Walton Scottsdale a brother and 11 grandchildren.
Gold climbed to 48.81 dollars an ounce in Paris trading, a fifth straight record as labor strikes threaten national disruption. The price rose 50 cents from last Friday.
Donald F. Shields, 37, was charged with driving while intoxicated after his car crashed into the Crosscut Canal at 66th Place and Oak Street. Police say he failed to see the embankment and left a line of posts and a fence before ending in the water.
Arctic air moved into the Dixie area prompting cold wave advisories from Northern Kentucky to the South Carolina coast. Snow fell from central Kentucky and northern Alabama to North Carolina mountains with Ontario-like conditions in Tennessee towns Monterey and Crossville reporting up to eight and three inches respectively.
Pranksters planted a balloon bomb on Glenn E. Powless’s doorstep at 6620 E. Osborn Rd about 7 30 last night. Mrs Powless opened the door and found a ball of fire. The couple kicked it into the yard where it burned out. Damaged carpet estimated at $5.
Police report vandals caused about 600 dollars in damage at Beverly Carey’s home 8607 East Dianna after a prior burglary. Clothing was piled and set afire in the living room and closets between 7 30 a m and 9 30 p m.
The Arizona Education Association endorses a resolution by the Association of Classroom Teachers calling for a sanction alert against Arizona. The move protests six percent budget increase limits for districts. If active, NEA may sanction the state, prompting teachers to avoid school jobs there.
Robert Dean Endreson, 20, goes on trial before Superior Court Judge Howard V. Peterson for the March 12 1968 murder of 21 year old Linda J. Hodge. Hodge’s nude body was found in a desert shack northeast of Scottsdale.
A furnace motor overheated causing about 400 dollars of damage at Fenton Sergmiller residence 8332 e Heatherbrae Saturday. Firemen also tackled small blazes at Indian School Rd and Brown Ave a palm tree at Fashion Square and a tree house at Main and 77th with Lt David Kleuskens treated for a hand injury. Another fire in a field near Yavapai School was extinguished Sunday.
